This is a 3-day itinerary – snowshoeing in Rila Mountains – treks from one hut to another. We’ll visit the area of theRila National Park: the Seven Rila Lakes, Skakavitsa Waterfalls, The Green Ridge and Pazardere Valley. You’ll feel the solitude of the “The Desert Mountain” as someone called Rila once long time ago. You’ll see how is it to spend a night in basic conditions high up, surrounded by the white sharp peaks or Rila.
The trek is suitable for people with previous winter walking/snowshoeing experience and with proper equipment.
Day 1: Starting point is the area of Panitshishte – Zeleni Preslop, accessible by car (1,5 hours drive from Sofia). Trek to Skakavitsa Hut, where we can do an optional detour to Skakavitsa Waterfall, the biggest in Rila Mountains, all covered in ice this time of the year. Further we continue ascending to the top of the Dry Ridge, from where a short descend takes us to Rila Lakes Hut (2150 m.) – our overnight accommodation for this evening. Total walking for the day: 5 hours, +800 m. Possible shorter option – 4 hours, +650 meters.
Day 2: About 4 hours trek to a high mountain pass at 2600 m. and further to Ivan Vazov Hut (2300 m.), situated in the middle of Northwestern Rila. Optional additional walk to the surrounding summits is possible. Ascent for the day: +450 m.
Day 3: Walk back to the pass and descend via the panoramic Zeleni Rid Ridge back to the starting point or to the area of Malyovitsa. Walking time: 6 hours, +400 m. Good end of this trip might be a visit to the thermal pools in Sapareva Banya village on the way back.
