Some mountain journeys are about reaching a summit.
Others are about discovering an entire landscape step by step.
This route through the Pirin Mountains and Rila Mountains is designed as a true mountain crossing — linking Bulgaria’s most spectacular alpine regions through ridges, glacial lakes, remote huts, traditional villages, and some of the highest peaks on the Balkans.
It is our more advanced version of the Classic Rila-Pirin Tour 8-day guided walking route that covers the best of the mountains of Bulgaria. The hiking days are long and physically demanding, but fully achievable for active hikers with good general fitness and some previous mountain experience. Trails regularly cross rocky alpine terrain, steep mountain paths, and exposed ridgelines, while always following marked hiking routes within the national parks.
We spend one night in a mountain hut and we traverse the whole Rila and Pirin ranges in two top days – The Marbel Ridge crossing and the Rila Lakes – Malyovitsa Main Ridge – Dears Lake crossing.
Trip Difficulty
Best season to visit: July to September.
Over eight days, the journey gradually unfolds from the marble ridges of Pirin to the broad alpine landscapes of Rila. The experience combines challenging hiking days with cultural moments, mountain hospitality, and enough comfort to fully enjoy the adventure: luggage transfers are arranged daily, so hikes are done with a light day pack only.
This is a route for hikers who want more than scenic walks. It is for those who enjoy long mountain days, dramatic terrain, high summits, and the feeling of moving through an entire mountain world rather than simply visiting it.
Days 1–4
The adventure begins in Bansko, a lively mountain town lying beneath the sharp white peaks of Pirin.
The first hikes introduce the character of the range: steep marble slopes, panoramic summits, and exposed alpine ridges. You will climb Mount Polezan and later tackle the most demanding and unforgettable day of the trip — the crossing of the Marble Ridge via Mount Vihren and the famous Koncheto Ridge.
The stage ends with a night in the atmospheric Yavorov Hut before leaving Pirin behind.
Day 4
After the intensity of the high ridges, the route slows down for a day of forests, culture, and recovery.
A scenic transfer leads to Rila Monastery — Bulgaria’s most important monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, hidden deep within the forests of Rila.
The day ends in Sapareva Banya, famous for its thermal mineral springs.
Days 5–7
The second half of the journey explores the vast alpine scenery of the Rila Mountains.
The trails pass above the legendary Seven Rila Lakes, continue across high ridges toward Mount Malyovitsa, and explore quieter corners of the range around Strashnoto and Yonchevo Lakes.
The final goal is Mount Musala — at 2925 m, the highest summit in the Balkans and a fitting conclusion to the journey.
