The Foal and the Marble Ridge

We offer a two-day trek through the main (also called Marble) ridge of Pirin Mountains, crossing its tiniest part – the famous Foal, also including ascent of the highest peak of Pirin Mountains – Mount Vihren (2914 m). This is a challenging trek for those who are not afraid of heights, are in very good physical condition, have some hiking experience and proper equipment.

Highlights:

  • Two days of hiking with amazing panoramas on the way and overnight in a high mountain hut.
  • Ascent of Mount Vihren, the third highest on the Balkans and highest in Pirin.
  • We’ll cross the whole Marble Ridge including the famous Foal.
  • We’ll explore the nature of Pirin National Park.

Itinerary:

Day 1: You’ll meet with your guide in Bansko early in the morning of this day. 25 min ride will take you up to Vihren Hut at 1950 m – the start point of the trek. Ascent of Mount Vihren – 6 hours, +1000/-1000 m. Accommodation in Vihren Hut.

Day 2: Early morning start and walk via Mount Kutelo (2908 m), The Foal and further along the Marble Ridge. Descent to Yavorov Hut at 1740 m. 8-9 hours total, +1200/-1400m. It is possible to spend the night in the hut or to descent for another 2 hours down to the asphalt and take a ride back to Bansko – additional -500 m descent.

Equipment needed: hiking boots, rucksack (35-45 l), trekking poles, water and windproof jacket, rain cover, sun hat, sun lotion, sunglasses, warm hat and gloves, water bottle (1,5 litres), travel liner (optional), torch, personal first aid kit.
