This is a 5-day snowshoeing trek that covers the most interesting parts of the Rila Mountains, as well as the highest peak of Vitosha Mountains near Sofia. We will trace our tracks through the covered in snow trails of the Rila National Park and Vitosha Nature Park. At the end we will visit the world-famous Rila Monastery.
The accommodation is in comfortable family hotels in Govedartsi and Sapareva Banya villages at the foot of Rila where we will try the local cuisine of the region. Sapareva Banya gives some options for spa-treatments at the end of the tour.
We rate this tour as moderate to difficult, suitable for novices in snowshoeing in average physical condition, but having the right equipment for such weather conditions.

Explore Vitosha and Rila Mountains on a 5-day guided snowshoeing tour from Sofia, combining snowy mountain trails, alpine landscapes, the Musala area, the Seven Rila Lakes, Malyovitsa, and a visit to the famous Rila Monastery. The tour is designed for active travelers who want to experience Bulgaria’s winter mountains without technical mountaineering.
| Difficulty / Technicality | What to expect... | Daily Ascent (1) Moving time (2) | Best For | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
— Day 1 | Moderate | Start from Sofia with a short transfer to Vitosha Mountain. Depending on conditions, snowshoe to Black Peak (Cherni Vrah) or follow a loop route around the Konyarnika area. Continue to Govedartsi, where you stay for the next three nights. | +500/-500m 4.5 hours | A first day combining a mountain summit with a comfortable introduction to winter snowshoeing. |
— Day 2 | Moderate | Transfer from Govedartsi to the Malyovitsa area and snowshoe into the remote Razdavitsa Ridge. The route reaches Wild Boar Lake, surrounded by some of the most impressive peaks in this part of Rila, including Kupenite and Lovnitsa. | +600/-600m 5.5 hours | Snowshoeing through quieter Rila landscapes away from the main resorts. |
— Day 3 | Difficult | Transfer to Borovets and take the gondola to around 2370m. From the upper station, snowshoe towards Icy Lake Hut (Ledenoto Ezero) at around 2700m, with views towards Musala Peak (2925m), the highest summit in Bulgaria and the Balkans. Return to Govedartsi along the same route. | +750/-750m 6 hours | Experienced walkers who want a demanding high-mountain snowshoeing day without attempting a winter summit ascent of Musala. |
— Day 4 | Moderate | Transfer to Panichishte and take the chairlift to around 2140m. Snowshoe through the Seven Rila Lakes area, following a loop route that visits around five of the lakes, depending on winter conditions. Continue to Sapareva Banya, with the option to relax in the outdoor hot mineral pools. | +400/-400m 4.5 hours | Experiencing Rila’s famous lake landscape in winter with an optional spa experience afterwards. |
— Day 5 | Easy | Transfer from Sapareva Banya to Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural landmarks. Visit the monastery and take a short walk to the cave associated with St John of Rila before returning to Sofia. If preferred, the final day can include an additional snowshoeing route instead of the monastery visit. | ±150m 1.5 hours | Finishing the tour with Bulgarian culture, history and an easy winter walk. |
Note!
Winter conditions in Vitosha and Rila can change quickly, with snow, ice, wind and reduced visibility possible at higher elevations. Routes and walking times may be adjusted according to current conditions, lift operation and snow cover. Proper winter clothing, waterproof footwear, snowshoes and poles are required; additional winter equipment may be recommended by the guide depending on conditions.
The Musala-area day is a high-mountain snowshoeing route, but it is not a summit ascent of Musala. Reaching Musala Peak itself requires a separate, more technical winter ascent.
The Seven Rila Lakes may be completely or partially covered by snow in winter, so the experience is primarily about the surrounding alpine landscape rather than seeing the lakes in their summer appearance.
This tour is suitable for active travelers in average to good physical condition, including beginners to snowshoeing who are comfortable with several hours of walking on snow and uneven mountain terrain.
The routes are generally non-technical, but the tour includes long days and elevation gains of up to 750m, so good fitness and proper winter clothing and equipment are important. Previous snowshoeing experience is helpful but not essential.
This itinerary combines two of Bulgaria’s most accessible and scenic mountain ranges in one winter trip.
Comfortable family hotels, local cuisine and the option for hot mineral pools in Sapareva Banya add a relaxed cultural and wellness element to the mountain experience.
