Itinerary

Day 1: Georgia

Arrival

Inbound flight to Tbilisi, pick up at the airport and transfer to your hotel. The accommodation will be in a hotel in the city center.

Tbilisi

We’ll take an evening stroll through the central parts of Tbilisi, followed by dinner at a restaurant with panoramic views of the old town, which is picturesquely situated on both banks of the river.

Day 2: Tbilisi – Telavi – Omalo

From Tbilisi, we’ll head east, passing through Kakheti, Georgia’s famous wine-producing region. We’ll continue through the city of Telavi, entering the mountains and following the route to Omalo-Pshavi – one of the world’s most remarkable high-mountain roads. Along the winding dirt road, we’ll cross our first mountain pass of the journey – the Abano Pass, at an altitude of 2,826 meters, venturing deep into this isolated region of the Caucasus. We will stay in Omalo for two nights.

We’ll spend the day exploring and hiking in Tusheti – through the mountains, and toward the border with Dagestan – reaching the village of Diklo. After exploring Omalo, we’ll continue along the roads and trails connecting the surrounding villages until we arrive in Diklo, then we will return back to Omalo for a second night there.

Nakaicho Pass

We’ll do a transfer from Omalo to the starting point of today’s trek. We’ll gradually ascend along a panoramic ridge, exiting the forest zone. This will allow us to enjoy beautiful views of the Tusheti mountains all around us and to see parts of our upcoming route. We’ll cross the ridge point at 2,996 meters, Mount Pitsilamta, and Nakaicho Pass before descending into the valley. We’ll then do a short transfer to the village of Girevi for an overnight stay and a tasty local dinner.

Day 5: Girevi – Kvakhidi Tent Camp

Our trek begins from the village of Girevi, where we load our luggage onto the horses and set off on our journey. Today, we will slowly advance into the high parts of the mountain, ascending the endless valley of the Alazani River, which will take us from the lush pastures and homes of the Tushetians to the high plateaus and bare peaks of this part of the Caucasus. The river is powerful, fed by the waters of numerous tributaries, and signs of life appear along our path one by one – abandoned old stone structures, shepherds’ camps, and towers, prompting us to guess how they were built and how one could possibly reach them…

The trail leads us to our first campsite – a shepherd’s camp located on a terrace by the river. We can sample local produce and observe the daily life of the locals who inhabit this place for just a few months each year.

Day 6: Huakhidi – Atsunta Pass (3,431 m) – Second Tent Camp

Atsunta Pass

Our goal today is the Atsunta Pass (3,431 m), the connection between the regions of Khevsureti and Tusheti, located not far from Tebulosmta (4,493 m) – the highest peak of the Eastern Caucasus and the highest point of the Chechen Republic.

The Alazani Valley gradually leads us to the Atsunta pass, revealing views to the west of the increasingly imposing Caucasus Ridge. Once we cross Atsunta, we’ll make a stunning descent that will take us to the site of our second camp at the foot of Atsunta Pass.

The campsite is a beautiful spot with panoramic views, situated on the Khidotani ridge. It is managed by a local family that offers basic amenities for visitors. Here we will set up our tent camp and spend another authentic evening in the high mountains under the stars of the Caucasus.

Day 7: Tent Camp – Mutso Fortress – Shatili

Welcome to Khevsureti

Today will be a more relaxing day, a reward after the strenuous hikes of the past few days. From the tent camp, the trail quickly descends to our meeting point with the transport that will take us to Shatili. We will visit the main attraction in the Shatili area along the way – Mutso Fortress, perched on steep cliffs. This impressive defensive structure has been preserved in its authentic form. We’ll also explore the eerie ossuaries, bearing witness to past tragedies. Visiting the fortress takes about an hour. We will then continue to Shatili and check-in. The village is located close to the Chechen border and is famous for its stone tower houses, ancient ossuaries, and evidence of a unique culture that once inhabited this region. We’ll have free time to explore this fortress town, which has guarded the area since ancient times.

Day 8: Shatili – Bear Pass – Roshka

Datvisjvari Pass

From Shatili, we’ll drive to Datvisjvari Pass (2,676 m) by car. Known as Bear Pass, this route is a key link between the “capital” of Khevsureti – Shatili – and the outside world. From the Bear pass we’ll spend about three hours hiking up to Kistanistavi Peak (3,048 m), then descend to the village of Gudani along a beautifully scenic route. Our journey through the heart of the Caucasus continues westward to the village of Roshka, which we’ll reach after a short drive.

Day 9: Roshka – Chaukhi Pass (3,338 m) – Juta

Chaukhi

Today’s goal is the Chaukhi Pass (3,338 m). This trek is considered one of the most beautiful in the area, filled with boundless mountain vistas. We’ll gradually ascend through the valley, passing by the Abudelauri lakes along the way. Leaving the valley, we climb high enough to take in sweeping views of the peaks all around – including Kazbek, Chaukhi, the border ridges with Russia, as well as the massifs in Khevsureti and Tusheti that we’ve already crossed. We reach the Chaukhi pass and begin our descent, with the towering cliffs of Chaukhi drawing ever closer in the background.

We descend toward the village of Juta, from where a short transfer takes us to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) for an overnight stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 10: Mount Kazbek, Holy Trinity Church and Gergeti Glacier

Sabertse Pass

Today we will get close to the impressive 5,000-meter peak of Kazbek and the vast Gergeti Glacier. We’ll cross Sabertse Pass at 3,150 m, leading us to the high-altitude Alti Hut, then continue to the moraine of the Gergeti Glacier. At the start of our trek, we’ll also visit the Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba), whose iconic image against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek is world-renowned and has become emblematic of Georgia.

Day 11: Kazbegi – Tbilisi

The Cross Pass

It’s time to say goodbye to the mountains, with one final pass to cross by vehicle – the Cross Pass. This pass is the high point of the Georgian Military Highway, a historically significant route that has connected Russia and the South Caucasus for centuries. Along the way, we’ll visit the Russian-Georgian Friendship Monument, Ananuri Fortress, and Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia. Then we arrive in Tbilisi, check-in, and have some free time, followed by dinner.

Exploring the city

Tbilisi is an exciting experience – a lively, dynamic city filled with sights and bustling with energy. We’ll explore some of the main landmarks, including the Narikala Fortress, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Old Town, the sulfur baths, and more. It’s a chance to enjoy urban life in Georgia and prepare for the journey home.
