Escape the City. Discover Sofia’s Backcountry Playground.
Just beyond Sofia’s skyline rises Vitosha Mountain—a place where the city fades behind you with every step uphill. Within minutes of leaving Bulgaria’s capital, you’re skinning through snow-covered forests, climbing towards wide alpine ridges, and earning descents that few visitors ever experience.
While Vitosha is best known as Sofia’s local mountain, it hides an impressive variety of backcountry terrain. Gentle forest slopes provide the perfect setting for a first ski touring adventure, while long traverses, remote descents and steep couloirs offer exciting objectives for experienced ski tourers and freeriders. In snowy winters, it’s even possible to link over 1,000 vertical metres of climbing and skiing in a single day, finishing in quiet villages on the southern or western side of the mountain.
